Book recommendations to give clear Biblical foundations on the theology of worship
I’m bugged that so much of the modern day ‘worship’ and ‘worship leading’ as little to do with what the Bible loves and expounds about worship itself. We sing ‘break my heart with what breaks yours’ but don’t actually dig deep into the Word of God to discover, what is God’s heart?, how does God want us to worship?, what does worship mean to Him?
This is ideally something one should look at before someone get into teaching it and leading it from the front.
These are not practical or devotional books, they are not necessarily the ‘best’ books on worship either – they are just solid preliminary theology. They will give you the basic building blocks of what worship really is in the Bible.
1. Engaging with God – David Peterson. (I’m going to like this as he was my principle at Bible College ;-) ) Probably the most readable and exhaustive of the three books.
2. Worship: Adoration and Action – Don Carson (ed). Good set of essays with lots of food for thought.
3. Worship in Spirit and Truth – John Frame. John is just the babe of clear philosophical and Biblical thinking.
Why is this in a Youth Work blog? Well how much of what we do interacts with the chaotic ‘worship’ and ‘worship leader’ scene of popular Christian culture? Yes, I thought so too.
